Danalogue - Teleportations
Dan Leavers has been working towards this debut album for a while now. Perhaps best known as a member of the avant-garde jazz trio The Comet is Coming. He was also part of the more electronic-focused Soccer96 with the drummer from Comet and also part of the (jazz) supergroup Flock. All those acts have moments that would have found appeal with fans of Ian O’Brien or even UR, whose jazz-infused techno informs much of this album.
Leavers’ work has always had a cosmic bent, so unsurprisingly, this album has a distinct space-based concept. There has been genuine effort made to have this album feel like an intergalactic journey, as if each track represents a newly encountered planet.
The concept is laid bare on ‘Far Beyond The Sun’, “behind the stars in the sky. I’ll see you there,” reminding me of the space-funk of Parliament/Funkadelic.
The brilliant lead single ‘Moebius Triptych’ coaxes the listener further into the techno/electro spectrum. Synths become layered and gain velocity over the purposeful beats. ‘You Are On The Right Track’ brings the era of electronic pioneers Cluster and Harmonia to the fore. The outstanding ‘Theta Wave Convergence’ draws a line straight from them to the modern clubbing experience. ‘On To The Next Dimension’ is surely spinning at an extraterrestrial house party right now.
Released on the same day as BOC’s new album, it might be the future-forward antidote to their darker work and is deserving of just as much attention.
