Fat Dog quickly established themselves on this isle with their raucous shows continually popping up on year-end listings. The epic debut WOOF brought that live energy to the domestic setting, and their sophomore effort looks to build on that established ground.
Opener ‘Smile and Wave’ is a familiar whirlwind effort. A driving baseline instantly on the attack, building to a celestial chorus containing the sinister line ‘If you weren’t born with love, I’ll make you die with it’. The title track is another excellent punchy effort juxtaposing the sentiment with cute lines like “I’ll put my feet for a bit, Let AI write a hit” & “Was gonna write the next line, I can’t be bothered ‘cause I’m tired”.
‘Shit Love’ might be the standout, dropping you into the midst of a rave. The repeated “Cooking with gas” is bang on. ‘Call It What You Want’ is awash with synths and keeps that up-front energy. ‘Bad Dog’ draws on the DNA of the debut. Relentless with some of its North African sounds. The crescendo comes at you with the ferocity of a peak-time D’n’B tear-up. ‘The Devil’ is only going to add to the wild live experience.
There are some detours like the euro-pop ‘Go F**k Yourself’ or the spaghetti western-inspired ‘Snakes’, but it’s their colossal Fat Dog Vs. The X-Men sound that endures. That said, closer ‘Aliens’ embraces its mission, building with aplomb with the grandeur this album deserves.
