Rocky DeValera and the Gravediggers - The Grand Social
Rocky DeValera and the Gravediggers... my oh my. Rocky and co. put on a show. They called it "the last dig" but I certainly hope not. Hopefully the energy in the room gave the lads a kick up the arse to book more concerts because they were on fire from beginning to end. Badges at the door, rockabilly haircuts and punk boots galore. Is this the Grand Social or have we teleported to (I'd imagine) Toner's? Uncle Karl Tsigdinos provided the warm up tunes, with an arsenal of rockers to give the floorboards a seeing to. The Deviators were on support, and they bounced onstage with the energy of a trio of 20 year olds. Their merch was brilliant, the songs were riotous and the crowd ate up every second of it. Will have to see those lads again soon. On come Rocky and the lads, to rapturous applause and an ignited spirit of equal parts nostalgia and excitement. Ferdia (Rocky himself) is a ball of energy onstage and his vocals were perfect for the gig. The Lizard on guitar duty... good lord. The man is half guitar, I'd reckon. Jack 'Knife' Healy on rhythm, backing vocals, duelling solos and duelling bandana (with Rocky) was on fire. Jack Dublin sent vibrations through our chests with his basslines and both drummers rocked us to death with their rhythms. 'Peter Gunn', 'Pool Hall Baby', 'Shakin' All Over', 'Sinne Fianna Fáil Blues' and 'John Wayne'?!?! Good Christ. If you missed this, miss out you did.
