Cable Boy- The Grand Social

Recent Goo cover stars, Cable Boy, landed in The Grand Social as part of their Forever tour. Their critically acclaimed debut album (and not just in our magazine) has been turning heads for a month now, and it was a first chance for many fans to see their heroes and claim the vinyl version of the LP. Knowingly, the band ask, “Who has a record player?” The muted crowd response draws the hilarious follow-up. “Poor investment, guys. Nobody buys records.” ‘Let’s Go’ was an apt way to start the set as a fine slice of indie-pop, though perhaps the closing line “do you wanna leave” less so. ‘Seen It All Before’ is a perfect example of their use of multi-vocalists, with bassist Liam Murray sharing the assignment with lead singer Semi Olusa. This ‘extra’ dynamic just really appeals to me, in numerous bands. Their self-described “goth-disco” style is especially obvious on ‘Something In My Head’ and ‘Purple (End of The World)’ which send the whole room into a happy shuffle. Album highlights ‘Trapped Alone’ & ‘Drought’ prove live bangers too, as they perform every track from the album, bar one. The (interlude) track was intentionally different. On their closing track ‘Forever’, it all becomes too much for synth player Corneille Tshibasu. Clearly feeling like he’s missing out on not being in the audience, he descends down the stage steps and goes for a bop. The crowd are more than happy to briefly count him among their numbers on a triumphant night for the band.
